Three days of a strike by UCH doctors over alleged assault

Under the auspices of the Association of Resident Doctors, resident physicians at University College the in Ibadan, Oyo State, initiated a three-day strike on Thursday in protest of an alleged assault on one of their colleagues by the patient’s family.

John Oladapo, the president of ARD, said reporters in the state capital of Ibadan that the physicians were requiring a public apology from the individuals who had attacked and injured him on Sunday.

Oladapo stated, “On Sunday, a patient’s relative intentionally, premeditatedly, and with great fury attacked one of our members.

“The two men attacked the doctor in the consulting room and began beating him up while he was seeing a known patient with sickle cell disease who was experiencing a severe crisis at the emergency department.

“This attack also included beating up the patient’s mother who attempted to step in. The men rushed after the doctor and beat him up as he tried to flee.

“Our member suffered injuries and damage to his mental health and self-esteem before the hospital security officers intervened and saved him.”

In order to prevent such incidents in the hospital in the future, the president consequently urged the management of UCH to enhance its security architecture.
