Orji Kalu: Ogbonnaya Onu was an exemplary politician and philanthropist

Senator Orji Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, has expressed sorrow at the passing of Dr. Ogbannaya Onu, the state’s first civilian governor.

While pleading with Onu’s family to find comfort in the knowledge that their late dad led a meaningful life, the Senate Committee on Privatization Chairman recognized Onu’s contributions to the development of the nation.

According to PUNCH Online, Onu passed away on Thursday after a brief illness in a hospital in Abuja.

In the general election of 2023, the 72-year-old former governor ran on the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket, but President Bola Tinubu prevailed.

In a letter of sorrow sent from his Abakaliki media office, Kalu called Onu, a prominent politician, writer, engineer, and former Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, a nationalist who was passionate about Nigeria’s prosperity and unity.

“I urge the deceased’s children and loved ones to sustain his worthy legacies, as his death is a huge loss to Ndigbo and Nigeria in general.

“The late statesman was a consummate politician and selfless philanthropist who served meritoriously in various capacities in the public sector.

“His wise counsel on national issues will be greatly missed, as he will be remembered for his outstanding leadership qualities,” he said.
