JUST IN: NLC demands Abure be fired and closes the LP secretariat
In protest of the party’s upcoming national convention at the end of this month, the Nigeria Labour Congress invaded the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday.
The congress also called for Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman, to be fired.

Abure was accused by the NLC leadership of organizing a “secret” conference without consulting important parties.
Abure is up against the NLC and the House of Representatives caucus because of the planned convention.
Abure was charged by the workers with plotting to overthrow the Labour Party.
The protesting employees were denied admission into the party secretariat by police.

Ajaero is being accused by the Labour Party’s National Working Committee of desperate attempts to unseat Abure, according to a report published on Saturday, March 16 by PUNCH Online.
The allegation was a response to an open letter written on Friday by the political wing of the NLC, the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission.
The letter included accusations against Abure and the NWC, saying that they had proposed holding a national convention on March 27 in Umuahia, the state capital of Abia.

The letter stated in part, “That the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilize workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024, given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC.”
There were rumors that the convention’s goal was to re-elect Abure as the Labour Party’s only administrator, and there were worries about its secrecy.
The NLC’s political branch declared the convention to be unlawful, and they are calling on Abure to step down as party chairman right away.

In addition, they demand the establishment of a caretaker transition committee in order to plan a valid and inclusive national convention for the party.
The LP leadership, however, objected to the decision, claiming that Ajaero’s purported ambition to succeed him as the party’s national chairman was the reason for it.
