Two female students have been officially declared deceased as a result of the stampede, while several others have various degrees of injury, according to a university source who spoke with PUNCH Online.
“What we are hearing now is that two female students have died. They were said to have been suffocated because of the crowd and they were later declared dead by the healthcare workers,” the source said.
The majority of the students involved in the stampede were taken to nearby hospitals for medical assistance, according to Yunusa Baduku, the national president of the Nasarawa State Students Association, who confirmed the incident to PUNCH Online.

“Seriously, what happened this morning at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is very pathetic and uncalled for,” he stated.
“The students unexpectedly showed up at the location in large numbers and overpowered the guards after our plan to distribute palliatives to the students was about to take place at the university’s convocation square.
The bags of rice were supposed to be distributed at the Convocation Square, but they burst through the gate.

Sadly, the majority of our female students suffered injuries of varying degrees, and several of them were suffocated due to the crowding at the location where the palliatives were distributed.
We brought some of our students to the Federal Medical Center in Keffi for emergency care, and I am currently there.
Additionally, I received an official report as NASA’s National President stating that one student had passed away as a result of the regrettable situation.

“For the numbers of those injured, I cannot confirm that at the moment because some of them are at the school’s clinic while others are here at the FMC, Keffi receiving treatment.”
Baduku did, however, commend the administration of the university, the leaders of the student body, and the state government for their swift response in helping the students receive medical assistance.

“I want to commend the school management, the student leaders and even the state government for standing by us at a time like this. They are all doing their best to address the situation, and to ensure that normalcy returns to the school environment,” he said.
Abdullahi Sule, the state governor, recently gave each student at the Federal University of Lafia, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and the College of Education, Akwanga, two 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000.
