The action of members of an unidentified Muslim gang that attacked a worship center that hosts both Christian and Islamic services in the Alalubosa region of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, has been justified by the palace of the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

The members of the group, who claimed to be acting on Sulu-Gambari’s orders, were seen in a video that went viral on Facebook and was seen by Punch online correspondent on Thursday. The video indicated that the worship center was formerly a mosque but has since been hosting worshippers who are not followers of the faith.

The group, led by a man referred to as “Olojatuntun,” declared that such practice was an anomaly that would not be tolerated.

In an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, Abdulazeez Arowona, the spokesman for the Emir, justified the action by stating that mosques are for Muslim worship alone and shouldn’t be utilized for any other purpose.

“Mosques are sacred places of worship for Muslims and should not be used for any other thing as contained in the Holy Quran and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

“All hands must be on the deck towards ensuring that no religion should be dragged to the mud in the name of promoting ventures to spiritual engagements or deliverance of any kind,” he said.

Arowona added that “there’s a clear definition of religion, and how and when it should be practised by adherents. There is no contradiction(s) in the methods adopted by individuals or groups on how religions should be practised.”

He continued by saying that the necessary steps would be taken to guarantee that religious adherents in the Ilorin Emirate and elsewhere continue to live in peaceful coexistence.
