Only a few hours had passed since the president had pledged equitable pay and improved working conditions for Nigerians who were of working age.

In his inaugural May Day speech, Tinubu made the commitment to the country’s labor force. According to Morka, the APC government administration’s expansive economic policies and pay hikes are meant to help Nigerians overall as well as workers.

The text of the statement said, “We applaud the resilience, sacrifice, diligence and patriotism of Nigerian workers and celebrate their invaluable contribution to the building and sustenance of our nation’s economic life. Nigerian workers deserve the best quality of life that our nation can offer, which in turn secures our collective aspirations for total and sustainable economic growth and transformation.

“Delightedly, the President Bola Tinubu-led administration remains resolute in its commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers. Aside from the delisting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System and wage awards for several months, negotiations are in top gear to approve a new living minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

“The far-reaching transformative economic policies of the administration are intended to expand economic opportunities and benefits for workers and Nigerians in general. As we celebrate, we implore our workers to stand fast and continue to support and collaborate with the APC-led administration as it builds a more virile and prosperous country for present and future generations of Nigerians.”

Nigeria is one of the 160 nations that observe Labor Day, also known as International Workers’ Day.

Every year, this day is set aside to honor the achievements and social contributions made by workers.

To honor its employees, the Federal Government, led by Shehu Shagari, formally proclaimed May 1st as a national public holiday in 1981.
